The Nexus-fc consortium has successfully completed the project to develop a scalable concept for fast and grid-independent charging of electric buses in local public transport.

The basic idea of the project was to develop a scalable concept for fast and grid-independent charging of electric buses in public transport.  Accordingly, a charging system was being developed that draws energy from a fuel cell throughout the day and provides high charging powers from a battery buffer storage. The consortium was based on a joint venture between Schäfer Elektronik GmbH and the fuel cell specialist Proton Motor Fuel Cell. Other project partners included the KIT, the Frankfurt public transport operator ICB, and fischer Power Solutions GmbH as battery supplier.

As part of the project, fischer Power Solutions developed an 800V high-performance battery system that can be discharged with three to four times its rated capacity. It is therefore particularly suitable as a buffer storage system for self-sufficient and grid-connected EV refueling application.
